Read the lyrics and they're rather too poetic for a song, one might think, yet they work well in context. They were indeed originally a three-verse poem called Reality Unreal, that encompassed the first two (as seen here) verses and the chorus, in that order. The "swirling water" section was added to fit the music.

Spring meadows as you canter by
Could all be in the clouds
The rose's petals in array
Might be so falsely proud
Yet in the glow of stunning dawn
You sense the firm beneath
And clinging to the smallest bait
You hang with clenching teeth

They run in green and yellow fields
The fancies of the mind
To frame within the picture
All that has been left behind
And though the pitch and roll of thunder
Echoes through the vale
You swear with all your earthbound charm
To fight them tooth and nail

Confront the summer's wakening
Discover all the deep
Time shall not devour you
If your mind doth never sleep
Truth can never hurt you
As its final tale is told
For all the best deceptions
Never made themselves so bold

The swirling water drags you down
Remember - you're a babe
Imagine how to breathe again
But in a different way
Just let the precious oxygen
Flood freely through your veins
As heady little bubbles
Re-invigorate your brain

Confront the summer's wakening
Discover all the deep
Time shall not devour you
If your mind doth never sleep
Truth can never hurt you
As its final tale is told
For all the best deceptions
Never made themselves so bold

The swirling water drags you down
Remember - you're a babe
Imagine how to breathe again
But in a different way
